Chosen Object: Dream catcher


A dream catcher is a hand crafted hoop with a woven web on it, it includes sacred items such as germ stones, beats and feathers. A dream catcher is believed to protect and shelter one's spiritual being from harm by only allowing pleasant dreams and casting away nightmares.

I personally believe I am a spiritual person in relations to my state of mind and I also believe that a dream catcher is not just an object that allows pleasant dreams but also a Gate way or portal into spiritual Realms not accessible to the physical body, It allows one's consciousness to travel into these realms to without any harm. As a fan and follower of Surrealism I believe that the unconscious mind hold a great deal of power and can be accessable through these portals allowing one to explore other worlds.


As a designer I identify with dream catchers mainly on how differently made they are across the globe but still communicate the same message and still recognisable. these items can be made with complex geometric shapes and and objects but still be recognised as a dream catcher which is what I believe design is all about, creating complex idealogies which people can still recorgnize and identify with.

 In conclusion i believe a dream catcher is a gate way to one's spiritual world, it allows one to explore uncharted terrotories and worlds, I personally identify with this object because of its regornisable yet complex nature.

Dream catchers and the Unconscious mind Dream catchers have existed for many generations, each generation had their own version, ideologies and interpretation of these mystical chasms. A dream catcher has been typically known to be a protective barrier against nightmare, only allowing pleasant dreams. From the legends of the Ojibwa tribe I have learned more about these mystical hoops of twigs and beats.
